President of Germany to Visit Israel

The President of the Federal Republic of Germany Dr. Johannes Rau, and his wife, will visit Israel (15-18.2) accompanied by the Minister of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth Dr. Cristine Bergmann, the Vice-President of the Bundestag Anke Fuchs, members of Parliament and other senior officials.

During his visit, President Rau will meet with President Weizman, the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Minister of Finance, Minister of Justice, Minister of Regional Cooperation, Chairman of the Likud party and the Mayor of Jerusalem. Among other events, the President of Germany will lay the cornerstone of the Desert Research Institute in Sde Boker (the building of which was financed by a German loan), will meet with Israeli youth and will be present at a football game between the national youth teams of Israel and Germany.

President Rau has been a good friend of Israel for many years. In his previous position, Rau served as Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia and advanced relations between the states, including in the areas of economics, culture, unions, youth exchanges and twin cities.
