March 7, 2000

On Tuesday March 7, 2000, the signing of a Protocol for a project employing Jordanians in Eilat will take place, under the auspices of the Israel Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Mr. Eli Yishai, and the Jordanian Minister of Labor, Mr. Eid Al-Fayez.

The event will take place within the framework of a special session of the Eilat-Aqaba Committee, headed by the two Chairmen of the Committee, Mr. Yoav Biran, the Senior Deputy Director General and Head of the Department for the Peace Process and Middle East Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Yousef Al-Dalabeeh, Chairman of the Aqaba Authority and Governor of the Aqaba district, who will both sign the Joint Protocol.

The project is designed to advance the cooperation between the towns of Eilat and Aqaba, and to serve as an example and a model for cooperation between the two peoples. Within the framework of this Project, up to 200 Jordanian workers will be employed in the Israeli city of Eilat for a period of a year. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the Employment Bureau and the Israeli Embassy in Amman have made a considerable effort to successfully conclude the negotiations.

The implementation of the project will be facilitated in the coming months with the assistance of the Israel Airports Authority, the Ministry of the Interior, the Israel Police and other parties.

The two governments have expressed the hope that the Jordanians employed on a daily basis in Eilat, within the framework of this Project, will build a "bridge of peace" between the two peoples, and that they will serve as ambassadors of goodwill between these two neighboring communities.
