(Communicated by Foreign Ministry Spokesman)
March 27, 2000

The President of Cyprus, Mr. Glefcos Clerides, will arrive in Israel on March 20 on a three-day state visit. The visit marks a climax in the process of improving relations between the two countries begun by President Clerides since his election as Cypriot President in 1993. Clerides will be accompanied by the Cypriot Foreign Minister, Mr. Ioannis Kasoulides, and by the Minister for Information.

In the course of the visit, the President of Cyprus will meet with President Ezer Weizman, Prime Minister Ehud Barak, Knesset Speaker Avraham Burg and will visit at Yad Vashem and in the Knesset. The Cypriot Foreign Minister will hold a working meeting with Foreign Minister David Levy.

The discussions in Israel will focus on bilateral issues connected to heightening cooperation between Israel and Cyprus. Other regional topics that will be discussed include the peace process, the dispute in Cyprus and the issue of Cyprus European Union membership.

During the visit, the foreign ministers will sign an agreement on cooperation between the tax authorities and a memorandum establishing dialogue between the foreign ministries of the two countries. A protocol on a joint work plan in the areas of culture, science and education will also be signed.

The President of Cyprus – who like President Weizman also served as an RAF combat pilot in the Second World War, and who was taken prisoner – will spend the last day of the visit with President Weizman at the Air Force Museum in Hazerim Base.
