Cabinet Communique
At the weekly Cabinet meeting today (Sunday), September 16, 2001:

1. The Cabinet observed a moment of silence in memory of the victims of last week’s terrorist attacks in the US.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said: "The people of Israel are – along with the entire world – outraged over the despicable acts of terrorism that occurred in the US in which thousands of US citizens lost their lives. I am certain that the American people – who cherish democratic values – are strong and courageous enough to stand against terrorism. Israel stands alongside the US and will assist in every way possible."

Prime Minister Sharon said that US President George W. Bush had warmly thanked him for the assistance that Israel has already given. The Prime Minister said that Israel attributes great importance to the establishment of an international coalition of democracies in order to fight terrorism.

2. Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer briefed the Cabinet on security events which have occurred in the last 24 hours and on security establishment actions. The Defense Minister said that up until now, even after last week’s attacks in the US, Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat has issued no directive of any kind whatsoever, or done anything at all, to foil or prevent acts of terrorism from the areas under PA control.
