FM Peres: Israel uninterested in escalation

(Communicated by the Foreign Minister’s Bureau)
July 22, 2001

Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said today (Sunday), July 22, 2001, that the murder of infant Diya Tmeizi and two Palestinian adults, Muhammad Hilmy Tmeizi and Muhammad Salameh Tmeizi, and the wounding of several other Palestinians late last Thursday night, was a horrifying and abominable act. The Foreign Minister called on those who perpetrated the murder to turn themselves in to the security forces.

"Simply put, these people brought shame to the Jewish people and disaster to Israel. They are cowards and if they had a drop of self-respect, they would go to the nearest police station and turn themselves in," Foreign Minister Peres said.

Foreign Minister Peres added that while Israel has no interest in escalation, it has every interest in avoiding a deterioration due to the complexity and severity of the situation.
