Response of FM Ben-Ami to Terrorist Attack

(Communicated by the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson)
February 14, 2001

Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami said in response to today’s terrorist attack:

"There are no words to describe my pain and grief in the face of the recent terrorist attacks, culminating in today’s murderous attack in which 8 Israeli citizens lost their lives and 19 were wounded.

The government of Israel is determined, as always, to do everything in its power to ensure the security and well-being of its citizens. The Palestinian Authority must understand that we cannot accept a situation in which the road to peace, to which all Israeli governments are committed, is marked by such heinous events, which undermine the very foundations of the peace process.

The course of violence which, regrettably, has been adopted by some within the Palestinian Authority itself, will produce nothing but grief and bereavement, and will only undermine the hopes of both peoples for peace and prosperity.

I wish to convey my condolences to the families of the victims, and a speedy and complete recovery to the wounded.
