Visit to Argentina of the Committee for the Disappeared Persons

The Interministerial Committee investigating the fate of the disappeared Argentinean Jews will depart tomorrow (September 3) for a working visit to Argentina, headed by the Deputy Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mr. Pinhas Avivi.

In the course of the visit, Mr. Avivi will meet with representatives dealing with the issue, and will listen to testimony provided by the families of the disappeared persons. Amongst other things, the Committee will be meeting with the Argentinean Minister of Justice, Jorge De La Rua and the organization "The Grandmothers of Mayo Square" (Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo) – an organization that has been working actively to locate children born in detention centers who were later abducted and adopted illegally.

The main goal of the Committee is to assist the families of the disappeared persons to obtain information on the fate of their loved ones, to locate the place where victims are buried and to enable the families to have their loved ones laid to rest in a dignified and appropriate manner.

The Ministry of Justice is represented on the Committee by the Director of the International Department, Ms. Irit Kohn. The Committee also includes other representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and additional public figures.
