Zvi Elpeleg appointed Honorary Consul of Turkey in Israel

In a ceremony which took place today (Thursday), January 18, 2001, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem, Zvi Elpeleg was appointed as the Honorary Consul of Turkey in Israel. Elpeleg’s appointment was approved by President Moshe Katsav and Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben-Ami, in line with tradition. Chief of State Protocol Sami Tevet presented the letters of accreditation to Elpeleg, in the presence of Turkish Ambassador to Israel Ahmed Uzumcu.

Zvi Elpeleg has an extensive military background; he is an academic and a businessman. He has served in the past as Israel’s Ambassador to Turkey and is known for his close ties with government leaders in Ankara. Suleiman Demirel, while serving as President of Turkey, personally requested that Mr. Elpeleg be nominated as Honorary Consul of Turkey. Elpeleg also served as the Chairman of the Israel-Turkey Friendship Association, which was established in January 2000.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs views this appointment as an important contribution to the strengthening and enhancement of the good relations between Turkey and Israel.
