Benjamin Netanyahu sworn in as Foreign Minister of Israel

Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in today (6 November) as Foreign Minister of the State of Israel. Netanyahu was briefed by the departing Director General of the Foreign Ministry, Avi Gil, on current diplomatic matters. Upon assuming office, the Foreign Minister appointed Senior Deputy Director General Yoav Biran to the position of Acting Director General of the Foreign Ministry. Mr. Netanyahu addressed the employees of the ministry, emphasizing that they are on the front lines of the battle for public opinion around the world.

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell called to congratulate Foreign Minister Netanyahu and during the conversation, they agreed to establish a direct line of communication between them. The Foreign Minister also spoke with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany, Joschka Fischer, regarding the importance of Israel’s relations with Europe in general and with Germany in particular. Foreign Minister Netanyahu congratulated several members of the House and the Senate upon their re-election to the US Congress.
