Deputy FM Melchior to Meet with the Pope and the French Foreign Minister

On Monday, March 11, the Deputy Foreign Minister, Rabbi Michael Melchior, will depart for the Vatican. Rabbi Melchior will meet with His Holiness Pope John Paul II, together with Sheikh Tal El Sider and Archbishop Michel Sabbah of the Alexandria Group Steering Committee. The leaders will inform the Pope of the accomplishments of the recent Alexandria Summit, with a view to enlisting his support for the objectives of the Alexandria Group.

In addition, Deputy Foreign Minister Melchior will meet with the Foreign Minister of the Vatican, Jean Louis Tauran. He will also meet with Cardinal Walter Kasper, responsible for relations with the Jewish World, and with Monsignor Michael Fitzgerald, responsible for inter-faith dialogue.

The Vatican views the visit of the Deputy Foreign Minister as an opportunity to renew the financial dialogue with the State of Israel, within the context of the promotion of bilateral ties.

On Thursday March 14, Deputy Foreign Minister Melchior will meet in Paris with French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrin, who invited him in order to advance the developing bilateral dialogue on the issue of the campaign against anti-semitism.
