DM Ben-Eliezer meets EU Envoy Solana
(Communicated by the Defense Minister’s Media Adviser)

Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer met today (Sunday), June 2, 2002, in Jerusalem, with EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana.

Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer called for the creation of a united European, American, Russian and Arab front against Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat’s policy of terror. The Defense Minister said that Arafat has knowingly created a situation in which there is a high degree of legitimacy in Palestinian society vis-a-vis the perpetration of acts of terror and murder against Israelis, thus making it difficult for himself to act against the terror organizations.

Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer expressed support for the idea of a regional or international conference, but stressed that the success of the conference depends on clearly defining its goals and whether or not it leads to constructive results.

Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer said that the security establishment is currently examining ways to ease restrictions on the Palestinian population that is not involved in terror, insofar as this is possible given the State of Israel’s stringent security needs.
