Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer met today (Tuesday), February 26, 2002, with European Union High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Dr. Javier Solana.
Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer said during the meeting that the latest wave of terror attacks has been perpetrated by the Tanzim which has turned into the leader of terror attacks against Israel. Arafat, the Fatah-Tanzim being of "his own flesh", is taking no action to rein them in.
Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer said that he is acting to resume the security meetings between Israeli security representatives and the Palestinians as soon as possible in order to calm the field, and bring an end to the terror attacks. The Defense Minister requested that Dr. Solana focus his efforts on convincing the Palestinians to resume the security meetings and stop the terror attacks.
Regarding the Saudi peace initiative, Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer said that it must be viewed positively, and that "it contains innovative elements and should therefore be promoted, not rejected."
