FM Peres Holding Conference Calls with Israeli Ambassadors

(Communicated by the Foreign Minister’s Bureau)
May 22, 2002

Foreign Minister Peres has been holding conference calls over the last two days (May 21-22, 2002) with the Israeli Ambassadors serving in North America and Europe. Foreign Minister Peres emphasized the need for reforms in the Palestinian Authority, in the realms of security, finance and the separation of powers.

Peres stated that in referring to reforms in the security realm, this involved the establishment of one authority over the various armed organizations, and the disarming of the Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), as opposed to the establishment of coordination between Jibril Rajoub and Mohammed Dahlan or a decision on the number of armed officers in the Palestinian police force.

In the financial domain, it would be desirable to establish transparency, instead of corruption and the funding of terrorism.

Foreign Minister Peres added that in spite of the success of Operation Defensive Shield, it is clear that there is no military solution, and that a diplomatic formula is required, otherwise the terrorism will return.
