(Communicated by the Foreign Minister’s Bureau)
During a meeting with his Greek counterpart, Georgios Papandreou, Foreign Minister Peres raised the issue of Maccabi Haifa’s forthcoming football match with Olympiakos, in the European Champions League, and their wish to host the home game in Haifa.
Foreign Minister Papandreou said that his country would support this request, in an Olympic spirit that establishes a separation between politics and sport. In addition, Papandreou noted the historic ties between Haifa and Greece.
Earlier, British Foreign Minister Jack Straw informed Foreign Minister Peres that he would hold talks with the heads of Manchester United, in accordance with FM Peres’ request, and would ask them to hold their away match against Maccabi Haifa in Israel.
