(Communicated by the Foreign Minister’s Bureau)
Jerusalem, 15 August 2002

Foreign Minister Shimon Peres met today (August 15) in Tel Aviv with members of the international team for advancing reforms in the Palestinian Authority. The team is headed by US Ambassador to Israel, Dan Kurtzer.

Foreign Minister Peres informed his interlocutors that Israel is implementing a series of measures to ease restrictions, and provided them with an update on the discussions that he held yesterday with Palestinian ministers.

The EU representative stated that elections should be held in the Palestinian Authority at the earliest opportunity. In turn, Mr. Peres stated that elections are not an end in themselves, and that the system is of greater importance than the leadership. Peres added that reforms would first have to be introduced in the security and financial spheres which had a direct effect on the lives of Israeli citizens, and that elections should only be held, once the system of government has been changed.

The team heads updated Minister Peres regarding the progress made in their areas of responsibility, emphasizing the relatively significant progress made in the financial realm.
