FM Peres meets with UN Secretary-General’s Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs

Foreign Minister Peres held a meeting today (August 18) in Jerusalem with the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy for Humanitarian Affairs, Catherine Bertini, who is concluding a seven-day visit to the region.

Bertini stated that she was encouraged by the process set in motion by Israel in the economic and humanitarian fields. Bertini noted that she had occasionally experienced a discrepancy between government policy and the implementation on the ground, although she understands Israel’s security concerns.

Foreign Minister Peres stated that the governent will work to fully implement its policy on the ground: "If there are discrepancies with respect to implementation, we will ensure that they are removed, and we will be happy to receive any comments in this regard." Minister Peres added that Israel’s policy is clear, and that "we are fighting terrorism, and not the Palestinian people."
