Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said today (August 7, 2002) that he hoped that the day would not be far off when Syria permits the establishment of a water pipe from Turkey to Saudi Arabia, that will provide water to all the peoples of the region. Peres made the statement during a meeting in Jerusalem with the Turkish Energy Minister, Zaki Cakan.

According to Minister Peres, the transfer of water from the Manavgat waterfalls to Israel will create a new reality in the region. The Minister added, "I hope that Turkey will be the major supplier of water to the region, instead of the region spreading fire to all who surround it."

The Turkish Energy Minister noted that Foreign Minister Peres has played an important and decisive role in the water project, leading to the enhancement of relations between Turkey and Israel. The Turkish Minister added that Turkey could also provide a greater supply of water than the 50 million cubic meters that has already been agreed upon.
