IDF Soldier Killed in Counter-Terrorism Operation
(Communicated by the IDF Spokesman)

28 February 2002

An IDF soldier was killed last night and two other soldiers were lightly wounded, in the course of an IDF operation in the Balata refugee camp, next to Nablus, in the West Bank. The family of the deceased has been notified. The wounded soldiers received medical treatment at the site, and were taken to hospital for further treatment.

Israeli infantry troops have been carrying out counter-terrorism operations overnight, around the Balata and Jenin refugee camps, both located in the Palestinian Authority.

In the course of the operation, heavy gun battles ensued between the terrorists and the IDF, and a number of large explosive devices were detonated against Israeli troops.

The refugee camps constitute a breeding ground for terrorist groups responsible for the murders of dozens of Israeli civilians.

The terrorist organizations have regarded the refugee camps as a safe haven from Israeli security forces, until the operation of last night. The operation was designed to target the terrorists and the terrorist infrastructure in the camps, as well as to send a message that there can be no hiding place for terrorism.

The IDF operation is continuing.
