ISA and Israel Police discover PFLP cell that perpetrated May 19 Netanya suicide bombing
(Communicated by the Prime Minister’s Media Adviser)
On May 19, 2002, at 16:20, a suicide-terrorist blew himself up in the Netanya market, killing three Israeli citizens and injuring over 60. The Israel Security Agency (ISA) and Sharon district police investigations have discovered that a Nablus-based Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) cell was behind this attack, and others. The cell was directed by the PFLP command in Ramallah.
On May 23, 2002, Adel Adnan Mahmoud Jumaa, a resident of Taibeh, was arrested. He admitted under questioning that he had driven the suicide-bomber and a woman handler to Netanya. Adel added that he was unaware that he had transported a suicide-bomber until he heard the blast after he had let him out. Following the blast, he returned the woman handler to Baqa al-Garbiyeh.
Da’a Ziad Jamil Giousi, a resident of Tulkarm, and a student at A-Najah University, was arrested on June 6, 2002. She told her investigators that PFLP militants in Nablus had asked her to accompany the suicide-terrorist to the target area in Netanya so as to make him appear more innocent. They considered the Netanya mall and the local promenade as possible targets before deciding on the market.
The investigation of the attack is continuing; more arrests are expected.
