Joint Press Release: Israel to Purchase Water from Turkey

The Prime Minister of Israel, Mr. Ariel Sharon, and the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, Mr. Zeki Cakan, met today, accompanied by their delegations, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem to discuss the issue of water supply.

Both parties agreed that Israel will purchase 50 million cubic meters per year for the period of 20 years.

A joint committee, headed by the under-secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey and the director-general of the Prime Minister’s Office, was established in order to discuss and finalize the issue of water transportation from Turkey to Israel. The committee will hold its first meeting in Ankara.

Both sides agreed on the importance of promoting the existing and planned joint projects in the GAP region.
