Letter from Foreign Minister Shimon Peres
to US Secretary of State Colin Powell

September 11, 2002

The Honorable Colin Powell
The Secretary of State
Washington, D.C.

Dear Secretary Powell,

As the United States remembers the terrible events of September 11, one year after the murderous hand of terrorism caused the loss of so many innocent lives in the destruction of the World Trade Center, the attack on the Pentagon, and the crashing of United Flight 93, Israel remembers together with you. As you honor the memory of the victims, we, too, pay tribute to the victims and the heroes of that terrible day.

The attack on America last year was an attack on the values that the United States upholds and defends as the leading democracy of the world. Indeed, as the champion of freedom and peace, America was targeted as such by the very enemies of freedom and peace. The terrorist events of September 11 cannot but be described as an atrocity against all civilization.

In heading the war against terrorism, your country, under the leadership of President Bush and your own invaluable contribution, is providing the world with a roadmap for the fight against this scourge. Peace, freedom, human dignity, and prosperity – values that are embodied by the United States – will predominate, as the struggle against terrorism and tyranny prevails.

We in Israel firmly believe that your country will lead the world’s democracies to victory in defeating terrorism and, thereby, further help to create the conditions for a brighter future in our region and the world at large. Our solidarity with you on the day that you commemorate September 11, and in all your country’s efforts on behalf of world peace and security, is firm. We share the desire for peace and coexistence, that will relegate these dark hours to the dustbin of history.

Mr. Secretary, we deeply appreciate the longstanding friendship, support and commitment displayed by the United States through the years, and would like to reassure you of Israel’s own commitment to working closely with the United States in its efforts to triumph over terrorism and lay the foundations for a peaceful and prosperous world.

As America pays homage to the victims of September 11 and the families commemorate their loved ones, we stand as one with you and convey our heartfelt sympathy and condolences.
