(Communicated by the Prime Minister’s Media Adviser)

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres and Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer met this morning (Friday), 4.1.2001, over breakfast, at Shikmim farm, with US envoy Anthony Zinni and US Ambassador to Israel Daniel Kurtzer, and discussed various ways to press Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat and the PA to make a strategic decision to combat terrorism and the terrorist organizations. Israel’s position – that the only way to get Arafat to act is for the US and Europe to increase pressure on him – was presented at the meeting. Prime Minister Sharon, Foreign Minister Peres and Defense Minister Ben-Eliezer presented ways to progress toward a complete cease-fire, which would then make it possible to proceed to the stage of diplomatic negotiations.
