PM Sharon meets US Asst.-Secy. of State Burns

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met on Friday, May 31, 2002, in his Jerusalem office with US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs William Burns. US Ambassador to Israel Daniel C. Kurtzer also attended the meeting.
Prime Minister Sharon and his guest discussed recent developments in the region and assessed the situation vis-a-vis the necessary moves for bringing about the cessation of terror, violence and incitement, and the resumption of the political process with the Palestinians. The Prime Minister reiterated Israel’s position regarding the need for the cessation of violence, terror and incitement, and reforms in the Palestinian Authority, before the political process can be advanced.
Prime Minister Sharon asked his guest to – during his talks with Syrian leaders on his upcoming visit to Syria – raise the issue of Israel’s MIAs and POWs in southern Lebanon and the demand that they be sent back home.
