15 October 2002

In the wake of the terrorist attack on the island of Bali in Indonesia, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres yesterday (October 14) sent condolence letters, in the name of the government and the people of Israel, to the foreign ministers of Australia, the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, Switzerland, Sweden and New Zealand.

The Foreign Minister asked that his colleagues convey his sympathy and sorrow to the bereaved families and wishes for a speedy recovery to the wounded. He also expressed his sympathy for the pain of the Indonesian people.

Mr. Peres condemned those who carried out the heinous attack and expressed profound shock at the inhuman massacre of innocent people.

The Foreign Minister warned that the free, democratic world cannot remain indifferent to the spread of the threat of terror to other regions. "The world must make every effort to uproot terrorism and to punish those responsible."
