|Visit of the Chairman of the Russian Federation Council

Sergey Mironov, the Chairman of the Federation Council, the Upper House (Senate) of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, will arrive on March 11, 2002 for a two-day visit in Israel, as the guest of Knesset Speaker, Avraham Burg.
In the course of his visit, Mr. Mironov will meet with Prime Minister Sharon, Foreign Minister Peres and the Construction and Housing Minister Sharanksy. In addition, Mr. Mironov will attend an official ceremony in his honour that will take place in the Knesset, and he will visit the Yad Vashem Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes Remembrance Authority.
Mironov is the most senior Russian figure to pay an official visit to Israel. He is the third most senior politician in the Russian political hierarchy after President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Mikail Kasyanov. Mironov was elected to the position in December 2001, and this is his first official visit overseas.
In October 2001, Israel and Russia marked the tenth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
