(Communicated by the Foreign Minister’s Bureau)

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom met with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Dr. Mohamed El Baradei in Vienna today (November 19, 2003). FM Shalom emphasized during their meeting the dangers that Iran’s nuclear programs pose to the international community and to Israel.

Prior to the IAEA Board of Governors meeting which is scheduled to take place in Vienna tomorrow (November 20, 2003), FM Shalom commented on Dr. El Baradei’s most recent report which clearly indicated continuous Iranian violation over the past 20 years of its commitments to the international community regarding the nuclear issue and its program to develop nuclear weapons.

During the meeting, FM Shalom called on the IAEA and the international community to act to guarantee that Iran ceases all of its activities to enrich uranium and implement the additional protocol along with all of its commitments to the international community. He noted that inspection should be tight and continuous. FM Shalom said that the seriousness of the Iranian violation demands that the issue be addressed by the UN Security Council.
