Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom stressed the importance of Italy’s current leadership of the European Union, following his meeting Thursday with Italian Senate President Marcello Pera in Rome. Shalom encouraged Italy to lead the EU to issue a declaration that would foster the normalization of relations between the Arab countries and Israel. This, he said, would be a part of Italy’s support for the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians and would constitute an important contribution to this process.

Pera said that, because Israel and Europe are so close culturally, the first significant steps can be taken to tighten institutional relations between the two.
