ISA and Israel Police arrest Eastern Jerusalem Hamas cell members
(Communicated by the GPO)

In the past month, the ISA and the Israel Police (Jerusalem District) have arrested three residents of eastern Jerusalem who – at the behest of the Hamas leadership in Hebron – orchestrated the August 19, 2003 suicide bombing on a #2 bus in Jerusalem in which 23 people were killed and 120 were wounded.

The three men are: Nassim Rashad Zaatari, born in 1981, single and holder of a blue Israeli identity card; Majdi Barakat Zaatari, born in 1978, married and the father of two, and holder of a blue Israeli identity card; and Abdallah Adnan Yehye Sharbati, born in 1981, single, and holder of a blue Israeli identity card.

Nassim Zaatari admitted to being head of the cell and said that he had been recruited to Hamas’s military wing in April 2003 by Ahmed Bader, who led Hamas’s military wing in Hebron until his death on September 9, 2003 in an action initiated by the security forces.

The cell instructed the suicide terrorist, Raad Misek, on how to detonate the bomb it had procured for him and transported him to a bus stop in Jerusalem where he later boarded a #2 bus.

At the time of their arrests, the cell members were planning to orchestrate three more suicide bombings in Jerusalem.
