President pardons 69 Palestinian prisoners

(Communicated by the President’s Spokesman)

President Moshe Katsav has signed reductions in the sentences of 69 Palestinian prisoners, who will be released tomorrow (Tuesday), August 12, 2003, in accordance with government recommendations, in the framework of efforts to renew the peace process with the Palestinian Authority. President Katsav demanded that the prisoners promise to refrain from participating in any terrorist or violent acts, from perpetrating any criminal acts for which they were imprisoned and declare their opposition to terror.

The Palestinian prisoners who are to be pardoned have been convicted of criminal acts, with no security aspect. The majority of prisoners were found guilty of entering and staying in Israel illegally.
