FM Shalom and US Secretary of State Colin Powell discuss today’s terror attack
(Communicated by the Foreign Minister’s Bureau)

US Secretary of State Colin Powell called Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom to express the condolences of the American government and people regarding today’s tragic terrorist attack. Powell said that the US conveyed to Abu Alaa that statements are not enough and that the Palestinians should fulfill their commitments in the areas of security and reform.

FM Shalom emphasized that the Palestinians have not taken the strategic decision to dismantle the infrastructure of terror and are not doing anything to prevent terrorist attacks. He also said that a cease-fire is not enough. It is only a first step to the full dismantlement of terrorist infrastructure.

FM Shalom added that there is no doubt that the security fence is the appropriate response to Palestinian terror attacks. The fence is effective and it prevents attacks from the places where it exists.

FM Shalom thanked the Secretary for the support of the American government regarding the fence vis-a-vis the International Court of Justice.
