Following his meeting with French Interior Minister Dominique de Villepin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom said that the government of Israel appreciates the actions of the French government, headed by President Chirac, and of Minister de Villepin against antisemitism. However, at the same time, the authorities must act very decisively and vigorously to counteract this phenomenon.
Minister Shalom said that the French judicial system must hand out heavy punishments to the guilty parties. He added that the educational system has great importance in teaching tolerance and love for others.
Minister Shalom noted that on Wednesday (25 August) France will celebrate Paris’s liberation from the Nazis, and it is unthinkable that sixty years later, Jews are threatened and living in fear in Paris. He added that the French media demonizes the Israeli Government and Prime Minister, thereby encouraging extremists.
Interior Minister de Villepin said that he condemns antisemitism and is doing his best to eradicate it, and that the President and Government in France are committed to protecting French Jews.
