(Communicated by the Foreign Minister’s Media Advisor)
Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom today (29 November) met, for the first time, Mr. Nabil Shaath of the Palestinian Authority, following a request by the Foreign Minister of the Netherlands, which is currently holding the rotating Presidency of the European Union.
Earlier today, Mr. Shalom met with his Jordanian counterpart, Foreign Minister Hani Mulki, within the framework of the mid-term ministerial meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (the Barcelona Process), currently taking place in the Hague. The ministers discussed the need to take advantage of the window of opportunity now presenting itself in the Middle East, in order to promote relations between the two countries in the political, diplomatic, economic and security realms.
Minister Shalom expressed his view that Jordan can play an important part in the maintenance of stability in the region and is capable of taking a role in the security sphere, similar to the role the Egyptians have carried out in Gaza.
