Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom spoke on Thursday (August 26) at a roundtable discussion on the Israel-Palestinian conflict hosted by Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini. The discussion took place in the framework of the 25th annual Rimini Meeting for Friendship Betweeen Peoples.

FM Shalom told some 5,000 delegates at the conference that the Palestinians must cease terror and return immediately to negotiations. A year has passed since Abu Ala’s appointment as Palestinian prime minister, and nothing has been done to advance the peace process. Unfortunately there has not yet emerged a courageous Palestinian leadership prepared to make peace with Israel.

Italian Foreign Minister Frattini said that both sides must implement the Roadmap, and that first and foremost the Palestinians must implement the security reforms called for by the plan.
