FM Silvan Shalom spoke to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and updated him on Sunday’s Cabinet decision regarding the disengagement plan and his visit to Egypt.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom spoke to U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell today (8 June 2004) and updated him on Sunday’s Cabinet decision regarding the disengagement plan and his visit to Egypt yesterday.

FM Shalom emphasized the important role that President Mubarak is playing. He also updated Powell regarding the Egyptian willingness to train Palestinian forces and to increase their own forces along the Philadelphi Road in order to stop the smuggling of weapons via tunnels.

Powell called the Cabinet decision a courageous step forward toward renewing the peace process.
