The President of Israel, Mr. Moshe Katsav, who is on a State Visit in France had a working meeting with the President of France, Mr. Jacques Chirac.

In the meeting between the two Presidents, which lasted approximately two hours, various issues were raised, including the bi-lateral relations between the two countries, anti-Semitism, the Israeli Palestinian conflict and global issues.

President Chirac asked President Katsav for a survey of the situation in the Middle East and, in particular, for his point of view on the conflict with the Palestinians.

On most of the issues there was consensus between the two Presidents and President Katsav praised President Chirac and his Government´s strong and determined actions against anti-Semitism.

After the meeting which took longer than planned, the two Presidents held a press conference during which they reported on the main issues raised during their meeting and answered the questions of reporters.

In the afternoon, the President met with the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. de Villepin.  The two raised issues concerning the Middle East conflict.

The first day of President and Mrs. Katsav’s State Visit concluded with a State Dinner hosted in their honor by the President of France and his wife in the Elysee Palace and to which over two hundred top government and society dignitaries were invited, including the Mayor of Paris, government ministers and the leaders of French Jewry.
