(Communicated by the IDF Spokesman)

Following security assessments and after various measures were taken to secure the Rafah crossing and to protect the civilians passing through, the crossing will be reopened for Palestinians tomorrow, August 6, 2004.

The crossing has been closed since July 18, 2004, due to security alerts regarding terrorist organizations’ intentions to carry out a terror attack in the area of the crossing.

Egypt and the Palestinian authority were notified before the crossing was closed to prevent the arrival of civilians to the crossing. In addition, the IDF was constantly in direct contact with international aid organizations.

In light of the closing, it was decided by the security establishment to open the Nitzana terminal in order to enable the return of Palestinians from Egypt to the Gaza Strip. This offer was rejected by officials in the Palestinian authority, and therefore was not implemented.
