Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Silvan Shalom met today (July 4) with his Romanian counterpart, Mihai-Răzvan Ungureanu.
At the beginning of the meeting, Foreign Minister Shalom thanked the Romanian foreign minister for the decision of his government to vote against the internationalization of the Middle East peace process and to discontinue its membership in the United Nations Committee on Palestinian Rights – a committee which has over the years adopted a series of resolutions condemning Israel.
Minister Shalom also commented on recent statements, particularly in Europe, on the need to maintain some type of dialogue with Hamas. Shalom said that any European government or organization which maintains even low-level contacts with Hamas, must know that they are speaking with and according legitimacy to an organization which is seeking the destruction of the State of Israel.
