Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom today welcomed Jordan’s new Ambassador Maarouf Bakhit in a ceremony at the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem with the following remarks:

"After four and a half years without an ambassador here, I am happy at your arrival, which indicates progress and an improvement in the special relationship between our two countries. Despite the difficulties which we have undergone during recent years, this step represents a positive turning point, especially since in the coming days a new Egyptian ambassador is due to arrive here. I hope this will lead to the arrivals of many more ambassadors from the countries of North Africa and the Gulf.

"We see an improvement in Israel’s position in the Arab world, to which the Disengagement Plan is also contributing.

"With regard to my expected visit to Jordan, in my conversation yesterday with the Jordanian foreign minister we spoke of the possibility of this likely taking place within a short while."
