(Communicated by the Prime Minister’s Media Adviser)
A meeting between Israeli and Palestinian representatives took place this morning (Wednesday), 26 January 2005, following Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s directive to resume the contacts that were frozen two weeks ago in the wake of the terrorist attack at the Karni Crossing.
Dov Weisglass, Shalom Turgeman and Assaf Shariv attended for the Israeli side. Saeb Erekat, Hassan Abu Libdeh and Muhammad Dahlan attended for the Palestinian side.
Various issues that will constitute the agenda for a future meeting between Prime Minister Sharon and the Palestinian leadership were raised during the approximately two hour meeting.
The sides agreed to meet again next week; until then, security contacts will continue.
It should clarified that the contacts were resumed in wake of the positive developments in the Palestinian Authority and the effort to prevent terrorism, and that the contacts are conditional on comprehensive Palestinian activity against terrorism, violence and incitement.
