Vice Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni held a working meeting today (Wednesday, 7 June 2006) with US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Welch on developments in the Palestinian Authority, including the issue of an international mechanism for transferring funds to the Palestinian people.

Minister Livni reiterated the government’s policy that the processes taking place within the Palestinian Authority are, at this stage, solely internal. She added that Israel is following events closely.

With regard to the transfer of funds, Livni expressed satisfaction at the results of the courageous policy of the international community vis a vis Hamas, while expressing support for the transfer of aid to the Palestinian people, as long as this is for humanitarian needs and is carried out indirectly by bypassing the Hamas government.

Minister Livni is to attend a meeting of the European Union’s Council of Ministers next week (June 12-14) in Luxemburg.
