On this day we share the suffering of the victims’ families – the hundreds of injured and the 85 men and women, young and old, who were murdered for no reason other than the fact that they were Jewish.
Message from Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni marking twelve years since the terror attack on the Buenos Aires Jewish Community Building (AMIA) in Argentina (July 18, 1994)
On this day that marks twelve years since the unconscionable attack on the Jewish community in Argentina, my heart and the hearts of the Israeli people go out to the Jewish community and the people of Argentina. Although I am unable to attend the ceremony, the Government of Israel and I are with you in spirit and share your pain. We share the suffering of the victims’ families – the hundreds of injured and the 85 men and women, young and old, who were murdered for no reason other than the fact that they were Jewish.
In the current global war on terrorism, Argentina and Israel are fighting on the side of free democracies that cherish life, fraternity and peace, against fundamentalist regimes sowing hatred, death, and destruction. In this war, the terrorists aim their weapons, intentionally and without any pangs of conscience, at defenseless civilians. In the war of terror against sane humanity, civilians have become the front. In this war, we must not display weakness or give in to blackmail or violence. Terrorism must be defeated.
The attackers must not go unpunished. Their crimes are crimes against humanity for which there can be no forgiveness or amends. Invoking a statute of limitations on these crimes would be an insult to the memory of the victims. I am confident that the Government of Argentina will fulfill its legal and moral commitment to go to any lengths to bring the terrorists and those who aided them to justice. Justice must be carried out for all to see.
The Jewish community in Argentina was able to rehabilitate itself and to rebuild its institutions. We send it our blessings. We congratulate you on the renovation of the new AMIA building and wish you success in all your endeavors. The mission of preserving active community life and the Jewish heritage in Argentina is a national mission of the first degree.
In order to achieve the dream of a better world, we must join together and help each other, Jews, Christians and Moslems as one. We must get together, all the religions and nations in Argentina, Israel and the rest of the world, and stand as one, united against the enemy. We must strengthen the connection between the State of Israel and the community in Argentina, between the Government in Israel and the Government of Argentina. Just as AMIA was rebuilt, stronger and more beautiful than before, we will build together a more beautiful, safer world, for us and for our children.
