Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon met this afternoon (Sunday, January 24, 2010) with UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Michael Williams. The two discussed the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the issue of the village of Ghajar.

At the start of the meeting, Deputy FM Ayalon stated that "Violations of Resolution 1701 and the continued smuggling of weapons from Iran and Syria to Hizbullah are the main risk to the stability in the north." Deputy FM Ayalon further emphasized that "Israel is not interested in an escalation, and our first and foremost interest is to preserve the peace and stability in the north. It is therefore necessary to cooperate together with UNIFIL and the Lebanese army in order to stop the smuggling of weapons and violation of resolution 1701."
