On Thursday, 15 December, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon and Maltese Foreign Minister Dr. Tonio Borg, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for diplomatic consultations that establishes dialogue and diplomatic cooperation between Israel and Malta.

The MOU reflects the strengthening of the relations between the two states in the last year. Israel and Malta expect in the near future to sign cultural and economic agreements in addition to this diplomatic agreement. The prime minister of Malta is expected to visit Israel for the first time at the beginning of 2011.

Ayalon: “Malta is an important state for Israel. Its membership in the EU and its good ties with North African states could be used to promote Israel’s political and economic interests in the region. The visit of FM Liberman was an important turning point in the relations between the states, which have gotten closer ever since.”
