Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon met today (Monday, 1 March 2010) with UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Sir John Holmes. The two discussed the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. The Deputy Foreign Minister presented Israel’s humanitarian efforts in aid of Palestinians and the easing of restrictions in Judea and Samaria.
The two also discussed Israel’s international aid program in times of emergency. Deputy FM Ayalon stated that Israel was very active in times of crisis, and is proud of its participation in humanitarian efforts, as was the case in Haiti. "Israel was among the first countries to establish a sophisticated field hospital to treat civilians," he added.
During his visit to Israel, Under-Secretary-General Holmes will meet with Noam Shalit, the father of Gilad Shalit. After his meetings in Israel, he will attend meetings in the Palestinian Authority.
