The State of Israel regrets the incident that occurred in Uman, Ukraine on 10 September 2010 between local residents and Israeli visitors, which ended in the deportation of a number of Israelis.

We thank the government and citizens of Ukraine for their hospitality and for the consideration and tolerance they show towards the Israeli visitors who come in large numbers every year to pray at the grave of Reb Nahman in Uman.

Israel, like Ukraine, assigns great importance to inter-religious understanding and to freedom of religious expression for all religions and communities. We are confident that this unpleasant incident will not affect the deep and long-standing friendship between our two peoples and hope that similar incidents will not recur.

In the spirit of the current Jewish holiday season, we take this opportunity to wish both peoples a Happy New Year.
