The Israeli intelligence community, whose actions over the years have granted a legendary aura to its creative abilities, continues to foster excellence in the field. The Head of the Military Intelligence Directorate Prizes for Creative Thinking were awarded yesterday (Sunday).

Prizes were awarded for a number of intelligence and technological projects which contributed significantly during the year to the IDF (Zahal)’s successes in the various spheres. The precise nature of such projects is classified and not available for publication. A special citation of merit was awarded to the 9900 Unit, which is responsible for imagery and geospatial intelligence.

In a special address, Head of the Military Intelligence Directorate Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi said that “in a rapidly changing complex reality, in an era of interwoven operative and tactical strategic changes, it is of the utmost importance to have creative thinking, which seeks to improve the ability of the Military Intelligence Directorate, the IDF (Zahal), and the State of Israel, to face the challenges of the hour and the many threats.”

The 9900 Unit utilizes a wide range of measures, including UAVs and satellites in order to gather and produce the imagery intelligence which it provides. The unit earned praise for its role in Operation Pillar of Defense, which revealed just a small fraction of its many technological and intelligence capabilities, and provided an up-to-date detailed image of the area of combat. The information that the unit provided led to the precise striking of terror operatives and infrastructure while minimizing harm to non-combatants.
