“A Hard Day for Israel”

PM Netanyahu spoke about the tragic helicopter crash while at a ceremony for the National Security College. Romanian President Basescu expressed deep condolence and solidarity with Israel

On Tuesday evening (July 27) Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the fatal helicopter crash which that took place in Romania. He began his speech at the closing ceremony of the most recent class of the National Security College by saying, “I express the worry of the entire people of Israel about the fate of the IDF (Zahal) soldiers, IAF personnel, who are missing since the tragedy in Romania”.

“The IDF (Zahal), its soldiers and commanders who are here today are the guarantee of our future”, Netanyahu said before adding that “the people of Israel are utterly concerned about the fate of their sons who were in an important mission representing the IDF (Zahal) and the State of Israel. We do not yet know all of the details but at this moment we can say that the tragedy is vast. This is a hard day for Israel. Today we are hurting and asking ‘How did heroes fall?’”.

The College Commander, Gen. Gershon Hacohen, also began his speech in reference to the helicopter tragedy. “With heavy hearts following the helicopter tragedy, we will begin the ceremony by saying the Lamentation of David: ‘How did heroes fall’”, he said. Turning to the new graduates, Gen. Hacohen said, “You are the leaders of tomorrow. We were given the merit of living in a good country and we have decided to protect it. You are the emissaries of the entire people of Israel, and as of tomorrow you will be partners responsible for Israel’s destiny”.

Meanwhile on that same day, Romanian President Traian Basescu transmitted a letter of condolence to Israeli President Shimon Peres, and to the people of Israel. “I received with great and deep sorrow the news of the helicopter crash which claimed the lives of Israeli soldiers”, Basescu wrote.

“Please pass on my sincerest condolences to the bereaved families, along with my deepest compassionate pity about the tragedy that happened. I wish to assure you at this point of the feeling of solidarity from the whole Romanian people towards the Israeli people in these difficult moments”, he added.
