On the morning of 23 August 2002, an IDF Infantry force thwarted an attempted terror attack near the central village of Kfar Darom in the Gaza Strip. The force spotted an armed terrorist cell, and opened fire at them. The terrorists returned fire, lightly wounding an IDF soldier. The soldier was evacuated for medical treatment.
One of the terrorists was killed during exchange of fire, and another was wounded and fled the scene. He hid in a neighboring Palestinian house and later died of his wounds. Since the terrorists operated from within a populated area, they endangered the lives of innocent Palestinians.
The two dead terrorists were found to be carrying Kalashnikov assault rifles, fragmentation grenades, bulletproof vests and several magazines.
The IDF soldiers’ alertness prevented a large-scale terror attack. The force conducted its action in a commendable, swift and efficient manner.
