Col. Imad Fares began his new tour of duty today as the CO of the Givati Brigade, replacing outgoing commander Col. Lior Shalev.
The exciting ceremony took place today in Metzudat Yoav in the presence of CO Southern Command, Maj. Gen. Doron Almog, and the Commander of the “Pillar of Fire” Formation, Brig. Gen. Ilan Harari.
Col. Shalev conveyed his deep respect for the combatants of the Brigade, and emphasized the past 11 months in which the Brigade took part in the fighting in the Gaza Strip.
Col. Fares said that he is aware of the weight of responsibility that will be placed upon him in this period while the Brigade fulfills a sensitive mission in the Strip.
GOC Southern Commander stated that the combatants of the Givati Brigade exhibited and continue to exhibit a fighting spirit and wished the two Brigade Commanders success.
From 1979 to 1986, Col. Fares served from the position of a combat soldier till that of Unit Commander in the Druze reconnaissance company.
1986-1987 he served as a platoon commander and deputy Battalion commander in the IDF’s officer’s school.
1987-1989 he served as the deputy commander of the Rotem Battalion in the Givati Brigade.
1990-1992 he served as the General Staff Officer of the Givati Brigade.
1993-1995 he served as the commander of the Rotem Battalion in the Givati Brigade.
1995-1997 he served as the deputy commander of the Givati Brigade.
1997-1998 he served as the General Staff Officer of the Galilee Formation (for a year and a half)
1998 he served as an instructor in a Company/Battalion Commander’s course for four months.
1998-Summer 2000 he commander the Southern Brigade in the Gaza Strip.
In the past year he studied in the National Defense College towards his MA in Political Science and National Security. In addition, Col. Fares is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, and holds a degree in Middle East Studies.
In 1977 Col. Shalev enlisted into the Israel Air Force, and into the Pilot’s Course.
1979-1992 he served in combat positions, from a combat soldier till that of the commander of the Nahal paratroopers battalion.
1992-1993 he served as a battalion commander in the IDF’s Squad Commander’s School.
1993-1996 he was the General Staff Officer in the IDF’s Northern Command.
1996 he commanded the Southern Brigade Commander in the Gaza Strip during the events of September.
August 1998 until March 1999 he was the Deputy Commander of the Gaza Division.
During the past two and a half years he served as the Commander of the Givati Brigade, as the Commander of the Organi Brigade and as the Commander as a Regional Brigade in the Gaza Strip.
Col. Shalev holds a BA in Industrial Engineering and Management.
