Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz met with Central Command officers on Wednesday evening (August 10) for a discussion on the challenges they face as well as the readiness of IDF (Zahal) forces to deal with mass riots and demonstrations.

During the meeting, and without prior knowledge of Central Command officers, Lt. Gen. Gantz ordered a surprise drill on violent disturbance management for soldiers in the Binyamin sector.

The drill was part of the IDF (Zahal)’s wider preparations for violent disturbances.

The Northern and Southern Commands recently established departments to train forces on how to contain mass riots.

The departments were developed to be similar to the Central Command’s existing riot department. Forces began training under the new departments this summer.

The training covers various topics, including: riot dispersal means, use of nonlethal weapons and behavior in front of both the media and the Palestinian population.

The creation of these training departments stemmed from the lessons learned from the “Nakba” and “Naksa” day events earlier this year with the goal of improving the IDF (Zahal)’s effectiveness in managing riots.
